SteelSecurity Beta (First Impressions)
By: Steve

A few weeks ago SteelSeries, a popular gamer company making everything from performance mouse surfaces to headphones and gamer apparel, launched their SteelSecurity Beta. This is the beta for an upcoming security suite from the company. As still a Beta, many changes are expected to be made, however, I'd like to present you with a brief article on my first impressions so far.

Overall, SteelSecurity looks like it will be a must-have in a gamers arsenal of software. It eliminates the CPU drag of running many individual programs to accomplish the same tasks. Instead, you have an excellent antivirus scanner that monitors both your system and incoming and outgoing emails, you've got a rock-solid firewall to protect you against the dangers of gaming online, and the icing on the cake is that you can fully customize protection profiles for all of your favourite games within the software. The interface is kept very simple making it extremely easy to run and navigate your way through, yet the simple interface does not represent the power behind it. I've used many anti-virus programs in the past few months, and when I put SteelSecurity on and ran my first virus scan I was amazed to see it had discovered a couple extra viruses that not even my current anti-virus software had seen! The firewall is also very straightforward to use, beginner and advanced profiles help make anyone feel at home when using it depending on your knowlege of computers. The option to send programs to SteelSecurity for analysis when they try to access the internet is a nice feature, however not making that default would help some users, as I see many not taking the time to read the full screen that pops up and they may start to wonder when their program is suddenly having a copy sent over the internet to Steel. Lastly is the game profiles feature of the SteelSecurity software. When browsing around the options for this, I was pleased to see many pages of extra security options that can be turned on and off when playing games. The ability of the software to automatically switch to the profiles of recognize games when launched is also a huge bonus. As personally, I tend to forget about profiles for games in additional software after about the first week, having SteelSecurity take care of the switching for me, will let me rest assured that I am always protected how I want to be.

In the end, this looks to be a rock solid piece of software about to enter the market and with the right advertising campaign I can see this being a huge hit for everyone both gamers and regular computer users alike!
