SilverStone started releasing 80PLUS Gold power supplies around the end of 2010, with our first review of the 750W model appearing in January 2011. This was the Strider Gold Plus series and it represented all 80PLUS Gold power supplies from 750W right up to the powerful 1200W model. The thing that put this series out of reach from a lot of the day-to-day users was the absence of lower wattage and lower priced models. The 750W model, which was the entry level model, would still cost you over $160 CDN which meant there was lots of competition from competing brands in the sub $160 market with lower wattage models.
Looking to reach the users who need lower wattage models, which is starting to account for a lot of PC builders as our components become more and more energy efficient, Silverstone has recently revamped their Strider Gold lineup, which previously only had a 1000W model, to now include 550W and 650W models. On my bench here today I have the 550W ST55F-G model.
