Let's focus on each piece of the system now, starting with the yoke.
The yoke itself is based on the yoke found in the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is known as one of the most flown airplanes ever and is also one of the most common airplanes for new pilots to train in. The Cessna Pro Yoke is a 1:1 scale model of the Skyhawk's yoke and is officially licensed by Cessna themselves. The only minor difference you'll find between Saitek's Skyhawk yoke and the real Skyhawk yoke is the addition of some buttons at the top of either side.
On the top of the right side you'll find a left/right rocker switch and up/down rocker switch on the front. Around back, for control with your index finger, you'll find a three position mode switch with an LED mode indicator above it and a single button. The three position mode switch is a feature I'm very fond of - by using Saitek's ST Programming software, this switch effectively triples the amount of buttons on the controller by allowing three distinct programming modes. I could have a mode with the buttons assigned to takeoff actions, another mode for regular flight and then a mode for landing. The possibilities are really limited by your own imagination!
The left side of the yoke has a four way rocker switch with an eight way hat switch right above it. Since the eight way hat switch has so many positions (eight), it defaults to the action of looking around your cockpit. This allows you to very quickly and fluidly view other parts of your instrument panel during flight. Just in front of the eight way hat switch, for control with your left index finger, is a single red button.
The Cessna yoke can be pushed in and out for realistic aileron control and can also turn a full 90 degrees in either direction.
To hold the yoke firmly in place on your desk during all that movement is a large desk clamp. This clamp slides into the front of the yoke and has a plastic screw on the bottom which pushes a rubber plate up against your desk. This design gives a very strong hold to the yoke and also does not damage or scratch your desk in any way.
