The second use of the SCX-4100 is as a PC scanner. It has an optical resolution of 600x600 dpi. That's an exceptional resolution, but not as high as that of some stand alone scanners. It is able to use an enhanced resolution of up to 4800x4800 dpi, but in terms of scanners the optical resolution is the deciding factor as to the upper quality limit of the scan. Also keep in mind that higher optical resolutions are really only required when scanning smaller images. If your monitor resolution is set to 1024 X 768, as most monitors are today, then at 600 dpi you only need to scan an image that is 1.7 inches X 1.28 inches to achive maximum resolution on your monitor (no zoom factor). How often do you scan an image that is this small? For most home, and definetely almost all office use, a 600 dpi optical scanner is lots. The third major use of the SCX-4100 is a black and white laser printer. Being laser, it greatly increases the speed of copies made because you don't have to wait like you do traditional inkjet printers. The printer has a speed of up to 15ppm on Letter sized paper. It's resolution matches that of the scanner at 600x600 dpi. Again, that's very exceptional as the majority of laser printers on the market now are between 600x600 dpi and 1200x1200 dpi, so your prints are definately of good quality. The toner cartridge in the printer I think may a little on the small side, but Samsung still rates it at 1000 pages with the included starting toner and 3000 with a replacement one. So I guess size doesn't matter :) |
