Features: The USB port on the Samsung 940UX is not there only to run a secondary function. In this new monitor, that USB port is capable of operating as the signal carrier - eliminating the need for even having a video card to run this display from. Additionally, this USB cable also powers a 2-port USB hub on the side of the monitor. After doing some research into the limitations of the 480Mbps transfer rate of USB2.0, I found out that it is only capable of carrying uncompressed video at a resolution of 640x480 running at a frame rate of 60Hz. But what if we compress it? If it's compressed, a lot more can be crammed into this video stream that's coming out of the USB port. At the other end? Have a chip that is capable of decompressing and displaying the information being received via USB. DisplayLink came up with a solution to this, the DL-120 and DL-160 chips.
The monitor itself is very much like the many other Samsung monitors we've had pass through our test bed over the years. With both analog and digital DVI inputs, you can run it just like any other LCD off your video card and forget the fact it even has the USB option if you want. But, there is also a USB plug beside the other input connectors, this is what you connect the included USB cable to if you're using it in the USB display mode. The power supply is built into this monitor, something I always like because you don't need to hide an external power supply box anywhere.
The large 19" screen can also be easily rotated into portrait mode (not supported with USB mode). I really like the arm style base the 940UX has. As you can see in the picture, all up-down movement is centered around a vertical arm up the back of the monitor. It also has an easy tilt function and the base can rotate 270 degrees either way.
The usual power, auto adjust, menu, exit and menu up/down buttons are found on the bottom right edge of the front bezel.
As mentioned earlier, there is a 2 port USB hub around the left edge of the 940UX. The monitor itself actually has a 4 port hub built in, however two internal USB streams are dedicated to the DisplayLink chip and the driver flash storage (I'll touch on this part during installation).
