Testing:
The S5's couldn't have arrived at a better time for me, I was just getting setup to record and mix a live charity concert to make a CD of the show. Having the S5s to mix on right from the start will give me plenty of time to analyze them in this area. On top of that they will also be assessed by listening to every style of music imaginable on them as well as using several DVD samples. All tests will be run with the monitors on Auralex Mopad monitor isolation wedges.

In comparison to the set of Yorkville YSM2P monitors I also have here, I found the Tapco's to have a very slightly hyped mid-range. However, Tapco doesn't include a frequency response chart with the monitors so it's hard to confirm how big this is. Is it anything that will effect your mixes? I'm going to say no, it wasn't large enough that it made an effect on my work or listening at all.

For overall listening and mixing however, the Tapco S5s were great monitors in my opinion. Keeping in mind that monitors can range from about $150 a pair up to $20 000+ a pair; for being what would be considered "home studio" level at around $300 - the S5s were excellent sounding monitors. Be it just casual listening or heavy production uses, you are sure to get great results from these monitors.

Conclusion:
For $300 the Tapco S5s are monitors that are sure to make an excellent first set for anyone in the market for a good bang-for-your-buck pair of monitors. Even for larger studios wishing to add an extra refrence set of monitors or perhaps to build up a more budget conscientious editing suit, the S5s would still be able to find their place. With the myrid of connections available, the hi/low frequency tweaking switches and a nice set of included goodies, you certainly can not go wrong for the money!

Pros:
Great sounding
Great design
Variety of input plug styles will ensure maximum compatability
Adjustable hi/low frequency correction
Included bundle is nice

Cons:
No frequency response chart included
Mid-range sounded slightly hyped when compared to other monitors
