The rear of the power supply has a fairly typical honeycomb punched grill alongside the power switch and power cable plug. I'm not sure if you can tell from my pictures or not, but the grill design chosen by Glacialtech uses slightly smaller holes than most other manufacturers are using these days. The use of larger holes would help to increase airflow and reduce turbulence, which will lead to more efficient cooling and the possibility for less noise at higher fan speeds.
I've been noticing a new cooling trend with the last handful of power supplies I've reviewed here; manufacturers seem to be moving away from the popularity of 120mm fans and are starting to adapt larger sizes. Most common lately has been the 135mm fan, but Glacialtech has upped that and is using a 140mm fan in the AX950AA. This fan is branded with their own logo, and the box only provides a basic chart showing fan speed vs load.
The AX950AA is entirely modular except for the 20/24pin ATX cable and the two 4/4+4 pin CPU connectors. The non-modular cables include 7x molex connectors, 8x SATA connectors, 1x FDD connector and 4x 6+2pin PCI-E connectors. The cables are all nicely sleeved in a black mesh and measure approximately 50cm from the modular connection to the first plug on the strand. The modular end of the power supply is divided up with two different connector types; four red eight-pin connectors for the PCI-E cables and four black six-pin connectors for the molex/SATA cables.
As I've touched on throughout this review, the AX950AA is certified in the 80PLUS program as reaching an 80PLUS Silver ranking. The vast majority of performance power supplies on the market are 80PLUS or 80PLUS Bronze certified, as these two categories currently have a combined total of 1586 power supplies in them at the time of this review. The 80PLUS Silver category is quite a bit more humble, with only 137 power supplies in it at the time of this review. Based on the trends I've seen from the past year, I'm predicting that we will see a much bigger push in the 80PLUS Silver category as 2010 goes on. You can refer to the chart below for what qualifications must be met to attain the 80PLUS Silver badge.
A couple other points of interest: the AX950AA has ActivePFC, supports ATX12V version 2.2 and has a variety of safety measures including SCP (short-circuit protection), OVP (over voltage protection), OCP (over current protection) and OPP (over power protection).
