Before I touch on the primary functions of the P3, allow me to briefly talk about all the "cool" extra features. The icon area of the player is what Samsung calls the "desk". This is actually a three page desk with the primary function icons on the middle page and by dragging your finger across the screen either left or right you can access the other two "side" pages. Features on these two side pages include a subway map system (VERY useful I found!), flash player, datacasts (RSS), alarm, games, calculator and address book. Yeah, the only thing it's missing is phone calling abilities and it would be a full featured mobile. All three pages of the Desk space allow you to use widgets - something fairly self explanatory based on the fact they are basically identical to the desktop widgets in Windows Vista and Mac OS X. Widgets include things like a clock, world clock, memo pad, sleep timer control, screen brightness control, slideshow and a few other small "toys" for your amusement.

Now let me discuss each of the primary functions of the YP-P3 player, these are the icons you will find on the main "desk" space when you power the device up for the first time.

Videos - Video playback on the P3 is fairly versatile, with the device supporting a higher number file formats than most. The P3 is capable of playing back WMV, H.264, MPEG and AVI (DivX) video formats right out of the box. In video playback mode the screen is used in landscape mode which provides a 16:9 widescreen viewing area.

Music - I was also quite impressed with the number of audio playback CODECs supported by the P3. Along with playing back the usual MP3, WMA, and WAV files, the P3 will also play OGG, AAC and FLAC files. Now the audio lovers who use formats like FLAC and OGG will have their files supported on a fairly mainstream player without any firmware hacks required. Album art and lyric display is also supported in audio playback mode.

Pictures - The photo player goes without much of an explanation. The P3 can view JPEG, Bitmap and PNG picture formats.

Texts - The text viewer is capable of displaying .txt files and reading aloud .tts (text to speech) files. The player supports adding bookmarks to your text files so you can easily pickup where you left off next time you come back to the file.

FM Radio - An integrated FM radio with FM recording allows you to not only listen to your favourite radio shows but also to record anything you're listening to as well. I always give mention to Samsung for keeping the FM radio alive in most of their new MP3 players when most other companies are simply dropping the feature. On the P3, you can store up to six radio presets and even have the device generate an auto-preset list based on what stations have excellent reception in your area.

Voice REC - Voice recorder gives you the option to make quick little voice memos and recordings by using the built-in mic.

File Browser - The file browser gives you easy access to virtually every folder on the device. This gives added speed to viewing pictures, playing back voice/FM recordings and even sorting through music.

Bluetooth - The P3's built-in bluetooth supports not only the use of stereo bluetooth headsets for listening to your music but it will also allow you to transfer files between bluetooth devices, play bluetooth games with other P3s, steam your music to any bluetooth capable speakers or car deck and even make phone calls through your phone by using the built-in mic and touchscreen dialpad. Bluetooth is handled with Broadcom's BCM2048 chipset.
